The Virtues in Medical Practice PDF
By:Edmund D. Pellegrino,David C. Thomasma
Published on 1993-11-11 by Oxford University Press

In recent years, virtue theories have enjoyed a renaissance of interest among general and medical ethicists. This book offers a virtue-based ethic for medicine, the health professions, and health care. Beginning with a historical account of the concept of virtue, the authors construct a theory of the place of the virtues in medical practice. Their theory is grounded in the nature and ends of medicine as a special kind of human activity. The concepts of virtue, the virtues, and the virtuous physician are examined along with the place of the virtues of trust, compassion, prudence, justice, courage, temperance, and effacement of self-interest in medicine. The authors discuss the relationship between and among principles, rules, virtues, and the philosophy of medicine. They also address the difference virtue-based ethics makes in confronting such practical problems as care of the poor, research with human subjects, and the conduct of the healing relationship. This book with the author's previous volumes, A Philosophical Basis of Medical Practice and For the Patient's Good, are part of their continuing project of developing a coherent moral philosophy of medicine.

Medical Microbiology E-Book PDF
By:David Greenwood,Richard C B Slack,Michael R. Barer,Will L Irving
Published on 2012-07-17 by Elsevier Health Sciences

Medical microbiology concerns the nature, distribution and activities of microbes and how they impact on health and wellbeing, most particularly as agents of infection. Infections remain a major global cause of mortality and in most hospitals around one in ten of those admitted will suffer from an infection acquired during their stay. The evolution of microbes presents a massive challenge to modern medicine and public health. The constant changes in viruses such as influenza, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and SARS demand vigilance and insight into the underlying process. Building on the huge success of previous editions, Medical Microbiology 18/e will inform and inspire a new generation of readers. Now fully revised and updated, initial sections cover the basic biology of microbes, infection and immunity and are followed by a systematic review of infective agents, their associated diseases and their control. A final integrating section addresses the essential principles of diagnosis, treatment and management. An unrivalled collection of international contributors continues to ensure the relevance of the book worldwide and complementary access to the complete online version on Student Consult further enhances the learning experience. Medical Microbiology is explicitly geared to clinical practice and is an ideal textbook for medical and biomedical students and specialist trainees. It will also prove invaluable to medical laboratory scientists and all other busy professionals who require a clear, current and most trusted guide to this fascinating field.

Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering PDF
By:B.H Brown,R.H Smallwood,D.C. Barber,P.V Lawford,D.R Hose
Published on 1998-01-01 by CRC Press

Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering provides broad coverage appropriate for senior undergraduates and graduates in medical physics and biomedical engineering. Divided into two parts, the first part presents the underlying physics, electronics, anatomy, and physiology and the second part addresses practical applications. The structured approach means that later chapters build and broaden the material introduced in the opening chapters; for example, students can read chapters covering the introductory science of an area and then study the practical application of the topic. Coverage includes biomechanics; ionizing and nonionizing radiation and measurements; image formation techniques, processing, and analysis; safety issues; biomedical devices; mathematical and statistical techniques; physiological signals and responses; and respiratory and cardiovascular function and measurement. Where necessary, the authors provide references to the mathematical background and keep detailed derivations to a minimum. They give comprehensive references to junior undergraduate texts in physics, electronics, and life sciences in the bibliographies at the end of each chapter.

Social Organization of Medical Work PDF
By:Anselm Leonard Strauss
Published on 1997-01-01 by Transaction Publishers

Today we face the painful reality of the prevalence of chronic, rather than acute, diseases. The technologies developed to manager long-term, incurable illnesses have radically and irrevocably altered the organizational structure of health care, presenting us with a frequently bewildering array of medical specialties. Social Organization of Medical Work offers essential insight into this new era of health care. Through richly documented, often gripping case studies, Anselm Strauss and his co-authors show us exactly how health workers are confronting the problems created by chronic disease and coping with today's highly technologized hospitals. They guide us through the various hospital work sites, describing in detail the kinds of tasks performed by medical personnel, the interactions of staff members with each other and with patients, and the overall resulting patient treatment and response. Focusing on the concept of illness trajectory, the authors vividly illustrate the complex, contingent nature of modern medical work. For example, open heart surgery keeps ill persons alive and may even improve them symptomatically, but those who do survive must face an uncertain future in terms of the physiological consequences of the surgery and the drugs required. They also have to adjust t altered lifestyles. In the new introduction, Anselm Strauss discusses the continuing importance of this work to sociologists, medical scholars, and medical professionals.

Effective Medical Leadership PDF
By:Bryce Taylor
Published on 2010-08-01 by University of Toronto Press

`Bryce Taylor, and active academic surgeon and medical leader, brings a lifetime of hands-on leadership experience, acute observation, and a deep understanding of the leadership literature to the task of helping others achieve their own leadership potential.' From the foreword by Bruce Barraclough, AO, FRACS, Past President, International Soceity for Quality in Health Care, and Chair, Clinical Excellence Commission, New South Wales, Australia `This book has meaning far beyond hospital walls. It is a book about leadership. Anyone responsible for the management of people and resources can learn from Dr.Taylor's unique skills and abilities.' David A. Galloway, Chairman of the Board, BMO `During the course of Bryce Taylor's Career, during which time he has been head of a large teaching hospital, he has learned a lot about leadership, confidence, and impartiality. His keen observations in Effective Medical Leadership will be an invaluable resource for anyone new to a position of leadership.' Steven Strasberg, Pruett Professor of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis `Bryce Taylor presents what today's medical leaders and those who are leaders of the future need-a patient-centred perspective that always takes into account the big-picture needs of the hospital, university, and staff body. Written thoughtfully and in plain language, Taylor's practical guide is a must-read.' Philip Hassen, President, International Society for Quality in Health Care, Dublin, and President, Canadian Network for International Surgery `Effective Medical Leadership is an outstanding guide for persons aspiring to leadership positions. In this accessible and up-to-date book, Bryce Taylor shares the wealth of his expertise with wit and humour, successfully addressing the challenges and problems encountered by leaders in the medical field. It should be required reading for all those seeking leadership roles in health care and related professions.' Garth Warnock, Chair of Surgery, University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital The modern hospital represents a complex community in which life and death decisions are made on the front lines of patient care, and difficult operational and strategic initiatives are developed in the offices of institutional leaders, Effective Medical Leadership describes the unusual position of a medical leader in an organization often administered by non-medical managers. Through extensive situational examples, Dr. Bryce Taylor illuminates the principles of medical leadership, focusing on the challenges, the solutions, and the daily life of the head of a division, department, or program. In hospitals, just as in other large organizations, effective leaders must appreciate the big picture, pay attention to detail, and, above all, care about the careers of their constituents in addition to patient health. Taylor outlines successes as well as failures, emphasizing that effective leadership is based on common sense, integrity, an orientation to the welfare of colleagues, and a passionate, consistent commitment to the mission of an organization.
